Celebrate Black History

Black History Month is a powerful opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black individuals throughout history. As educators, we have the privilege of fostering an inclusive learning environment where students can explore and celebrate the rich heritage, achievements, and resilience of the Black community.

This month goes beyond honoring iconic figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X. It is a time to showcase the countless contributions of Black Americans across fields such as science, art, music, politics, and social justice, while encouraging meaningful conversations that promote understanding and empathy.

Ideas to Elevate Black History in Your Classroom:

Create a Black History Wall

Dedicate a space in your classroom to showcase the achievements of Black individuals —both well-known figures and unsung heroes from diverse fields such as medicine, sports, and literature. Encourage students to research and add facts, quotes, or visuals to the display.

Incorporate Diverse Literature

Invite Guest Speakers or Virtual Talks

Create a Black History Month Research Project

Allow students to choose a figure, event, or topic related to Black history for a research project. Guide them through the process of research, presentation, and reflection to deepen their understanding while empowering them to take ownership of their learning.

Integrating Black History Month with TELPAS Practice

Black History Month presents a valuable opportunity to blend TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) practice with culturally enriching activities. By doing so, teachers can help English language learners develop language skills while deepening their understanding of Black history and its lasting impact.

Here are a few practical ideas:

• Picture Description: Show students a picture of a significant historical event previously discussed in class. Ask them to describe what they see or craft a story based on the image.

• Compare and Contrast: Present two pictures of pivotal events in Black history (taught earlier in class). Have students compare and contrast the events, focusing on key details.

• Story Sequencing: Provide four pictures representing a sequence of historical events. Have students narrate the story in chronological order.

By integrating Black History Month into TELPAS practice, educators create meaningful lessons that celebrate diverse voices and prepare students for success.
